We all have certain ways of displaying areas of wellness. These ways are universal - crying has tears, laughing has smiles. Caregivers who observe these characteristics then have an idea of how we are feeling.
Animals have ways of showing areas of wellness too. To the trained observer, the signs can be recognized, and any needed action determined.
To benefit the caregivers’ judgement basic skills in anatomy, movement, animal social behavior, and areas of wellness are needed. Once this knowledge is in place, an ethical response can be chosen. Then the appropriate techniques can be used, protocols adhered to and data recorded.
For example watch this video clip. Can we determine which animal is acting different than the group? She is showing us recognizable signs that can be used to determine how she is feeling. These clues are typical for animals that have an affliction where the eye is affected. Sunlight enhances her actions by causing the eye to close, tears and blinking. Elevation of the head and tail switching are key gestures also.
